Number pages without opening Word again

You merged five documents into one packet and now the reader has no idea where they are. Or a court, a school or a grant program wants every page numbered. Adding page numbers here takes about ten seconds, and you don't need the original Word file.

Your options

Position

Six spots: top left, top center, top right, bottom left, bottom center, bottom right. Bottom center is the classic. Bottom right is common in legal and business docs.

Format

  • 1 is just the number. Clean and simple.
  • Page 1 spells it out.
  • Page 1 of 12 tells readers how long the document is. Great for contracts and anything that gets printed, so nobody misses a page.
  • 1 / 12 is the compact version of the same thing.

Starting number

Start at any number. If this PDF is part two of a report that ended on page 40, start at 41. The "of N" total adjusts to match.

Skip the first page

Cover pages usually don't get a number. Tick this and numbering starts on page 2. Whether page 2 shows "1" or "2" depends on your starting number, so set it however your style guide likes.

Size

Small, medium or large. Medium matches normal body text on a Letter or A4 page.

Will the numbers cover my text?

Numbers sit in the margin, about half an inch from the edge, which is empty space on almost every document. If your PDF has content right up to the edge, like a full-bleed brochure, try a different corner or the smallest size. Preview it before you share it.

Numbers are added on top, not replacing anything

We add the number as real text on each page, so it stays sharp at any zoom and shows up when someone searches. Everything else on the page is untouched. If your PDF already has numbers and you add more, you'll have two sets, so check first.

Good times to add page numbers

  • After you merge PDFs into a single packet
  • Before printing a long document, in case the stack gets dropped
  • Exhibits and court filings, which often require numbered pages
  • Handouts made with Extract pages
  • Scanned documents, which never have numbers

Numbering a merged packet, step by step

Say you're putting together an application packet out of five separate files:

  1. Merge the files in the right order.
  2. Open the merged file in Organize PDF to delete any blank pages and fix rotations. Do this before numbering, or your numbers will skip.
  3. Come back here, pick "Page 1 of N" at bottom center, tick Skip first page if there's a cover, and save.

Now the person reading it always knows where they are and whether anything's missing.

Want a stamp instead?

If you need something like "CONFIDENTIAL" or "DRAFT" across every page, use Watermark PDF.

Font and color

Numbers are set in a clean, standard font in dark gray, which reads well on white pages and doesn't fight with your document's own fonts. It also prints sharply on any printer, including cheap black-and-white ones at the library.

Private by default

Numbers are added in your browser and your PDF never gets uploaded. Close the tab and it's gone from the page.

Questions people ask

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Add your PDF, pick a position and style, then click Add numbers and download the new file.

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. Tick "Skip first page" and numbering starts on the second page.

Can I start numbering at a number other than 1?

Yes. Set any starting number, and the "of N" total updates to match.

Will page numbers cover my content?

They sit in the page margin, which is blank on most documents. If yours has content to the edge, try another position or a smaller size.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The numbers are added in your browser on your own device.
